Contactado introduction

Dr Rebecca Jarman, University of Leeds, gives an introduction to the film Contactado showing at HOME as part of ¡Viva! 28th Spanish & Latin American Festival.

Aldo, a reclusive ex preacher, is enticed by a young man, who claims to be a follower, into reliving his past as the Contactee, the leader of a famous cult. After bringing Pelo malo to ¡Viva! 2014, Marité Ugas and Mariana Rondón have reunited in reversed roles as director and producer with this film inspired by extensive research on UFO cults in Peru. Contactado is a delightfully unusual drama that surprises and intrigues as we dive into the weird and wonderful world of cults, alien conspiracy theories and Andean legends that all swirl around the city of Lima. In times of social disruption and fundamentalism, people always look for something to believe in.

¡Viva! 28th Spanish & Latin American Festival features 50 screenings of 21 films from Spain, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica and Mexico.
