Bantú Mama introduction
A contemporary tale about a deliberately different kind of re-encounter between Africa and the Caribbean. Emma, a French woman of African descent, is arrested in the Dominican Republic but manages to escape custody. She finds shelter in the most dangerous district of Santo Domingo, where she is taken in by three siblings living without their parents. During their time together Emma helps Cuki, T.I.N.A. and $hulo reconnect with their forgotten African heritage, reflecting the director’s stated aim to shun clichés and “initiate reconciliation with roots that are often denied.” Blending almost fairy-tale plot twists with a gritty urban location, this is the sweet story of a crossing of paths that drastically changes destinies.
